After reading chapter 13, students created a tableau that depicted the scene they thought to be the most important in the chapter. The class then guessed what the scene was based on the tableau. After their presentation, the groups were asked to justify their thinking using evidence from the text. This is where the debate began.
As a class, we brainstormed the possible reasons why each scene was the most important scene in the chapter. We recorded our thinking, then we reviewed the format for writing a persuasive paragraph. With our evidence recorded and our format reviewed, we were ready to start planning in our groups. The conversations that followed were incredible! The students were listening, sharing opinions and really thinking about what evidence would best support their point of view as a group.
